About The Work
Camden Art Centre is pleased to present Representation – Return to Saihō-Ji, a photographic Limited Edition by Cerith Wyn Evans, produced in 2020. This work captures a photograph of the Heart Sutra as distributed to visitors of Saihō-Ji temple in Kyoto. To gain admittance to the temple's renowned moss garden, visitors are requested to spend time copying (tracing) the text, engaging in a meditative practice that intertwines physical action with spiritual reflection.
Wyn Evans' edition encapsulates this ritual, inviting contemplation on the act of replication and the transmission of meaning. The photograph not only documents a cultural practice but also serves as a conduit for exploring themes of perception, temporality, and the interplay between language and form. By focusing on the Heart Sutra—a text central to Mahayana Buddhism—the work bridges Eastern philosophical traditions with contemporary conceptual art.
This edition aligns with Wyn Evans' broader practice, which often interrogates the nuances of communication and the ephemeral nature of experience. Through this piece, he offers a meditation on the intersections of art, ritual, and the impermanence of both language and form.
Representation – Return to Saihō-Ji is an inkjet print on Canson Photo Lustre 310gsm paper, measuring 80 x 60 cm, produced in an edition of 30. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist. Proceeds from the sale support Camden Art Centre’s exhibition and residency programs.
