About The Work
Camden Art Centre is pleased to present More Beautiful Than a Peacock, a Limited Edition by Lonnie Holley, created in the occasion of his solo exhibition All Rendered Truth at Camden Art Centre in 2024. This work encapsulates Holley’s transformative approach to art-making, where discarded materials are imbued with profound personal and historical narratives.
Holley’s practice is deeply rooted in his experiences growing up in the American South, confronting the legacies of slavery, systemic oppression, and the civil rights movement. His assemblages, often composed of found objects like scrap metal, wire, and wood, serve as poignant commentaries on resilience and the human spirit. In More Beautiful Than a Peacock, Holley employs silkscreen techniques to translate his sculptural sensibilities into a two-dimensional format, capturing the essence of beauty emerging from adversity.
The peacock, a symbol traditionally associated with beauty and pride, is reimagined through Holley’s lens, reflecting themes of transformation and hope. This edition not only represents Holley’s unique artistic vision but also his commitment to conveying stories of struggle and triumph through art.
"The repetition of facial outlines in profile gives shape to the river of time, the forms and features that flow through his veins as DNA, yielding to the ancestors whose lives have gone before and who ‘work their mojo’ through him. Physical characteristics mark ancestral lines and familial relations—honouring both his Yoruba and Native American heritage—and, more expansively, the many faces outlined pay homage to unsung heroes whose contribution to the progress of humanity and the service of others deserves recognition." Gina Buenfeld-Murley (Camden Art Centre), All Rendered Truth, 2024
Printed in a limited edition of 35, each piece is signed and numbered by the artist. Proceeds from the sale support Camden Art Centre’s exhibition and residency programs.
