About The Work
Lucrecia Lionti uses everyday knitting styles and techniques to explore how economies of craft relate to mechanised production and social class. She draws and writes using intarsia and jacquard techniques, deliberately mixing and complicating words, phrases and languages to reflect on their etymology and histories.
At the forefront of Lucrecia’s edition, titled Cosy Lane, is the iconic brickwork of Gasworks and the surrounding buildings in Kennington and Oval. The piece incorporates muted creams and browns as a base against which flashes of brighter colour come into play, such as the striking, bright orange motif at the bottom left, hinting at the warmth of a fire as well as the brightening weather of the season.
The edition incorporates yarns sourced from shops around London with those that Lucrecia brought with her to London from Argentina. The natural fibre border, which has a coarseness that is characteristic of Lucrecia’s work to date, brings her life beyond Gasworks into an edition made far from home. This echoes the title of the edition, Cosy Lane, which speaks to the ‘home from home’ that Lucrecia has found during her residency at Gasworks.
